Piazza Duomo in Taormina

Piazza Duomo is located in the historic center of Taormina and is a meeting point to give way to the struscio along Corso Umberto first. The square is obviously overlooked by the Cathedral of Taormina, dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari and dating from the thirteenth century. Also overlooking Piazza Duomo are Palazzo Ciampoli, a fifteenth-century building now transformed into a tree, the Casa Floresta, with elements from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and the Town Hall, dating from the seventeenth century and home to the offices of the City of Taormina. In the centre of the square there is a circular fountain, the base of which was once used as a drinking trough. At the top of the fountain, which dates back to the Baroque period and is made entirely of Taormina stone, stands a centaur in the female version: a mythological being who holds in his hands a sphere and a scepter, symbols of power.
