where one of the neighbourhoods that symbolizes Italian unity was built, with square piazzas and regular streets meeting at right angles following the Piedmontese style influenced by the Roman decumanus. Among other monuments, this hill is home to Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four Major Basilicas, and the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, whose interior houses Michelangelo's splendid Moses. Moreover, nestled in the valley between the Quirinal, Viminal, and Esquiline is Rione Monti, considered Rome's first Medieval-era district which to this day has maintained its own special urban character substantially unaltered.
