The Palatine was home to the earliest nucleus of the city of Rome, as shown by many finds in a vast archaeological area always crowded with visitors in every period of the year. A little further down, the Capitoline is where the acropolis was built. Today it is home to Rome's city hall, and its piazza designed by Michelangelo is surrounded by Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo Nuovo, and Palazzo della Consulta, with the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius at the centre.
