Located near Torri in Sabina is Vescovio, home to the ruins of the ancient Roman municipium of Forum Novum. On these ruins rose the church of Santa Maria, which served as Sabina's Cathedral until 1495. The church was destroyed by the Saracens in the ninth century, then rebuilt and renovated a number of times. One of Sabina's most renowned monuments, the church preserves its twelfth-century Romanesque features intact. The Bell Tower has five orders of windows. Looted material – sculpture fragments, marble slabs – was used for its construction.
