The old village of Ponticelli, 45km from Rieti and not far from Scandriglia, is home to a small treasure: the Church and Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Our Lady of Graces). The Church owes its origin to a vow the Orisini family made in order to cure their sick son. The convent was initially occupied by the Amadeite Congregation, suppressed by Pope Pius V in 1566. The Church has a single nave with a roof truss. The splendid statue of Our Lady of Graces (Madonna delle Grazie) is kept in the polygonal-shaped apse. Three chapels are connected to the left side of the nave and one of them holds a 14th century painting of a Madonna with a Child between Saint Francis and Saint Anthony. The portico, refectory and cloister, with its 15th century fresco of the Crucifixion, attributed to Lorenzo da Viterbo, are all open to visitors. In Ponticelli it also worth visiting the Church of Santa Maria del Colle, one of the first places in Sabina where Christianity was practiced, with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as an early example of a pulpit.
