Casamari Abbey

Near Veroli is Casamari Abbey, built around 1036 by monks from Veroli, and Fossanova Abbey, where St Thomas Aquinus died in 1274. In the history of architecture, this is a cornerstone of the Gothic-Cistercian style in Italy. Around the lovely Cloister, enclosed by a series of paired columns, stand various buildings, the largest of which is the Church, with a three-nave basilica floor plan, a remarkable choir and a highly interesting Chapter House. The town's secular buildings are also magnificent: the Museum, with a wealth of Roman artefacts and works of art, the Refectory and the Library with its ancient volumes, parchments and books.
