Saint Felix of Cantalice is now the co-patron saint of the Diocese of Rieti and the shrine is a pilgrimage destination. Felice Porro was born in Cantalice between 1510 and 1515; as a child he was hired out as a shepherd and later as a farmhand. He was sent to work for the Picchi family in Cittaducale as a boy and it was there that he decided to enter the Capuchin order. Felix was ordained after having miraculously avoided being killed in an accident involving untamed horses. He entered the brotherhood in Rome in 1544 where he exercised his ministry for decades and was well known and loved. He was friends with Saint Philip Neri and Cardinal Peretti, who was to become Pope Sixtus Fifth. (Felix had predicted his papacy.) He died in 1587 and was acknowledged for his sanctity. Pope Sixtus Fifht requested that the procedure for his canonization begin immediately. He was, however, beatified in 1625 and declared a saint in 1712.
