Church of Saint Francesco in Leonessa

Coming to Leonessa, at the end of the 13th century, the Franciscans started the construction of the convent and Church of San Francesco. The elegant façade of the church, with a horizontal top, is framed by typical Leonessa red stone. The interior has three naves with powerful octagonal pilasters and hosts valuable works. Inserted in the walls of the naves we can see portals with bas-reliefs from the demolished churches of Santa Maria extra et prope portam and San Massimo. The interior also has a superb Christmas Crib in polychrome terracotta dating from the early 16th century. Opposite the Crib Chapel there is the Crucifix Chapel with a wooden cross by an anonymous 16th century sculptor from Umbria. The Convent of San Francesco, skilfully restored, contains a suggestive 15th century cloister, frescoed on the lower floor with stories about the life of Saint Francis.
