Located 20 km from Civitavecchia and 80 km from Rome, this necropolis extends over 750 hectares and contains around two hundred tombs. It has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2004.It is unique for the enormous quantity of painted decorations found there. The Etruscan necropolis of Tarquinia extends over 750 hectares and contains around two hundred tombs. It is unique for the enormous quantity of painted decorations found there. The use of decoration is not limited to this area, but in the Monterozzi Necropolis at Tarquinia, painting is so widespread as to become exceptionally important, particularly because through painting, the development of Etruscan civilisation can be studied and understood. Here we can go into their houses, see them eating at their banquets, reclining on their couches while musicians play and naked slaves serve the food; the paintings accurately depict the real life of the Etruscan population and accompany the deceased on their journey to the afterlife. At the heart of the necropolis, on a plateau overlooking the coastal plain, lies the Doganaccia archaeological site, distinguished by the towering pair of massive burial mounds commonly known as "the King's and the Queen's", which date back to the first half of the Seventh century BC.
