The National Archaeological Museum of Altamura is located not far from the historic center in the locality of La Croce, a major archaeological area where evidence has been found from the Bronze Age to the late Hellenistic age. The exhibition space is divided into four sections, starting from the prehistoric one, with an interesting photographic exhibition and on the Altamura Man, found in Lamalunga in 1993, the only skeleton of the middle Paleolithic found in Italy. The archaic section includes tombs and grave goods from the necropolis of Altamura and Gravina in Puglia. In the rooms dedicated to the classical and Hellenistic periods, numerous Attic vases are exhibited, while in the early medieval section one can admire gold and silver jewelery found in the Belmonte area. A restoration laboratory is also attached to the museum.
