Founded in 1868 by the Duke of Cavallino, Sigismondo Castromediano, the Provincial Museum of Lecce is the oldest in Puglia. It contains a rich collection of testimonies of the Messapian civilization and of the Roman settlements with terracotta, inscriptions, statues and Apulian and Attic vases. Located on the upper floor, the Pinacoteca collects paintings ranging from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, documenting Byzantine and Venetian influences on the creativity of local artists. Among the most prestigious brands stand out those of Bartolomeo Vivarini, Paolo Finoglio, Oronzo Tiso. A section is also dedicated to the minor arts from ceramics to ivories, from bronzes to the baroque age silver while a pavilion pays tribute to the great tenor Tito Schipa.
