Set up in the eighteenth-century halls of the splendid Palazzo San Francesco, in the square of San Severo, the Mat is the Museum of the Alto Tavoliere and includes a rich archaeological collection and an art gallery. The archaeological finds come from donations and recoveries from the local section of the Archeoclub of Italy and tell the stories of the territory from prehistory to the Middle Ages. In particular, the exhibition itinerary outlines the different phases of civilization of the ancient inhabitants of Daunia, through the excavations carried out in the surroundings. There are numerous Hellenistic artefacts, coming from the Casone farm and from Pendicone. The Pinacoteca del Mat is named after Luigi Schingo and contains works from the modern age and masterpieces by the master of San Severo who lived between 1891 and 1976.
