Located in the Municipality of Vernole, in the province of Lecce, the "Le Cesine" Reserve covers an area of about 348 hectares which includes the splendid oasis managed by the WWF. The reserve, which takes its name from the Latin "seges" which indicates an uncultivated or abandoned area, is a wetland of international value: distinctive habitats are the dunes, the marsh area and the Mediterranean scrub. The two ponds, contained inside, fed by rainwater, are separated from the sea by a cord of sand dunes. Here you can admire herons and mallards. There are numerous plant species housed in this habitat such as juniper, sea violet, yellow iris and rare wild orchids. For those who want to admire the beauty of the oasis with a guided tour, the reference point is Masseria Le Cesine, a defensive structure dating back to the fifteenth century. Also noteworthy is the 800-meter-long path for motor disabled and blind people.
