The Castle of Gioia del Colle was erected by Riccardo Siniscalco, brother of the more famous Roberto il Guiscardo. Over the years the fortification was redesigned by Roger II and by Emperor Frederick II, the main architect of the process of building up the area around 1230. In later historical periods, as for other Apulian castles, the partial renovation of the structure was a work of the Angevins and the Aragonese. The castle, once a fortress for the defense and residence of Frederick II, today houses the National Archaeological Museum.
