The Norman Swabian Castle of Bari is the symbolic fortification of Bari, seat of the Superintendency for Architectural and Historical Environmental Heritage of Puglia. Located to defend the main entrance of the city, a few steps from the Cathedral, visitors are welcomed today before entering the alleys of the historic center. Built by the Normans in the twelfth century, destroyed in 1156 and then rebuilt by Frederick the second between 1233 and 1240, the manor is one of the most interesting fortifications in the region, above all thanks to its strategic position. Fascinating testimony of medieval construction, the Castle has numerous expansions attributable to later periods. Shows and exhibitions are periodically organized inside the castle. Archeology enthusiasts can also visit the Gipsoteca, which houses casts of ornamental sculptures in use from the 11th to the 17th centuries.
