The incredible and unique story of the Jews of San Nicandro in Puglia begins at the end of the First World War, when Donato Manduzio, seriously injured, returned home from the front. An illiterate worker, he found himself confined to his bed, so he decided to learn to read. Very quickly making progress, he began to devour novels and other literary works, and then the Bible. It was then that he discovered Judaism, even though he thought there were no more Jews in this world. He began to practice the Jewish faith and closer and closer they joined him. After a while the community grew to 80 people. Towards the end of World War II, members of the Jewish Brigade passed through the village, with Stars of David on display in their jeeps. For Donato and his followers it was the first meeting with real Jews. They approached the soldiers, hugging them affectionately, and asked to go with them to the Promised Land. In 1946, a large part of the community of St. Nicander converted to Judaism and many made aliyahs in 1949.
