In 1956 Fernando Maria Castiella, then Spanish ambassador to the Vatican, commissioned some young pensioners at the Royal Academy of Spain to the Gianicolo - the architects José María García de Paredes and Javier Carvajal Ferrer together with the sculptor Joaquín Garcia Donaire - to design the new Panteón de los españoles in the Verano cemetery of Rome. Built in 1957, this small architecture carries out the commemorative theme using a minimum number of elements: a horizontal platform and two orthogonal walls that form an open-air room. The abstract radicality of the compositional program is tempered by the intense plastic and material elaboration of the parts, which like shadow machines exploit the action of sunlight, changing their appearance in the passing of hours and seasons.
