Inaugurated on January 14, 2009 and built with funding from the Puglia Region, the Museum of Memory and Welcome of Santa Maria al Bagno, on the Alfonso Lamarmora Promenade, reconstructs the events that took place in the marina of Nardò between 1945 and 1947. In recent years, in fact, over 100,000 Jews escaped the Holocaust found refuge here, who were received with extreme solidarity by the inhabitants so as to see the rise of a synagogue and a kibbutz. Three murals painted by one of the guests of the camp, Zevi Miller, remain from that time and are now kept in the museum designed by the architect Luca Zevi, where the extraordinary history of the refugees from the same murals and the reception camps has been reconstructed. Documents, testimonies and a photographic exhibition also tell of moments of joy and conviviality that the Jews returned to live, before the camp was abandoned and took the roads of the world or that of the nascent State of Israel.
