Pio Donati, was born on April 18, 1881. His family was part of the Jewish Community of Modena from 1606. He was a lawyer and a member of the Italian Socialist Party, elected in the 25th and 26th legislatures of the Kingdom of Italy. He declared to the town council of 7 April 1921 that in a secular school religious or political dogmas should not be taught and that a school was needed to prepare the student to reflect and reason, to make him capable of forming himself, a conscience and a conviction of his own. He was the most eminent character of Modenese socialism and the first target of the fascist gangs, who tried without succeeding in having him killed by the crowd. Twice he was saved by friends and public security officials who were fond of him. He began to suffer from ulcers and had to leave Modena for Milan, then he took refuge in Brussels where he died of fulminant leukaemia in 1927 at the age of 46. In December 1963, the Municipality of Modena had his remains moved to the San Cataldo Cemetery.
