Syracuse: Hypogeum of Piazza Duomo in Ortigia

Piazza Duomo, white and bright, the highest point of Ortigia, here a door opens along the walls of the archiepiscopal palace and allows us to excess the hypogeum with its series of galleries, one of which connected to the cistern that supplied water to the entire island of Ortigia, was also an ancient quarry, one of those from which it extracted the white stone that makes this city bright. Here we follow the path illustrated by photographs and prints together with a guide and wrapped in a warm light from the color of amber. Centuries of history have passed through this hidden place that during the Second World War offered shelter to the Syracusans from bombing. You feel so small between these imposing stone walls. At the end of the route, the guide opens a small door and the blue of the sea enters our eyes, the gallery ends in fact with an opening on the walls that protect the marina. Keep your camera ready because the spectacle will be dazzling.
