He preferred to take his own life so as not to hand over the list of the names of the Jews to the Nazis. His name was Giuseppe Jona, Venice remembers him with a plaque at the Campo del Ghetto Novo with the inscription, "master of righteousness and goodness". A graduate in medicine from the University of Padua, on 16 June 1940 Giuseppe Jona was elected president of the Jewish community of Venice. At the request of the Germans to hand over the list of Jews left in the city, Jona first signed his bequest to a charitable organization and then took his own life after destroying the evidence that documented the domicile of Venetian Jews hindering their deportation. He was an example of great courage, a hero who deserves to be remembered and never forgotten. May his memory be a blessing.
