The synagogue of Trieste, built in 1912, is one of the most important in Europe, second in size, only to that of Budapest. Before this synagogue the rites were celebrated in the four smallest synagogues in the city until the substantial Jewish presence in Trieste required the need to erect a structure that would represent it in importance and whose work was entrusted to the study Berlam of Trieste. With the advent of the racial laws the synagogue was closed and with the occupation of the city by the Germans the temple was reduced to a warehouse for the works of art stolen by the Nazis. The beautiful structure, characterized by oriental influences, has fortunately been saved to give us, even today, its splendor.
