  Stories of art in Lombardy

The origins of the large square of Casalmaggiore date back to the beginning of the seventeenth century, when the marshy and disconnected area where once stood the moat of the ancient castle. At that time the square is in clay and the pre-existing Church of the Barnabites faces it. A double loggia is built a few years later in the new piazza: the loggia is used not only to house the market that is transferred here from Piazza San Rocco, but also as a guardhouse, lazaretto, granary and warehouse. The old structure of the loggia remains unchanged until 1788 when the public palace overhung by the clock tower was built on top of its pillars and the piazza became very important in the city center. In the vast public space are celebrated parties, dances, processions and criminals are punished. The square takes on today's appearance only at the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to the bequest of the noble Leopold Molossi, when it is paved with pavement and the beautiful plank marble that covers the central strip, and on the west side is erected the new municipal building in place of the existing already in serious decline for the collapse of the foundations.
