  Notes of art in Lombardy

Located at the northern end of the province, near the banks of the river Oglio, the village of Soncino is an open-air museum because entirely surrounded by crenellated walls, accessible by four entrances, retains some towers on the north and east sides and guards to its inside several monuments, such as the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the civic tower, the heptagonal tower of the church of S. Giacomo, and outside the walls, the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie frescoed by Giulio Campi; but it is known above all for the fortress that rises in the south-west part of the village and is one of the best preserved and most representative fortified architectures of the region.
