  Notes of art in Lombardy

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce is among the most significant examples of Lombard Renaissance architecture. Built between 1490 and 1500 on a project by architect Giovanni Battagio and completed by Antonio Montanaro, it is a central plant on which are inserted four smaller cross-shaped bodies. The complex planimetric system derives from ancient models and from Renaissance studies on the central plan. The external volumes played on the interpenetration of geometric shapes are animated by the use of the warm color of terracotta alternating with the white of the plastered surfaces.
