  Notes of art in Lombardy

The Duomo is the most representative building, the emblem of the city; together with the Baptistery and the Torrazzo, it is one of the most important religious complexes in northern Italy. Dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and begun in 1107, after a serious earthquake it is progressively rebuilt adding to the original Romanesque construction architectural and decorative interventions of the following centuries. The different eras are represented in a layered system that gives great charm and complexity to the structure. The façade, entirely covered with marble slabs, is characterized by the magnificent Bertazzola loggia that connects the Duomo to the Torrazzo. The monumental internal system of the church is accompanied by a rich decorative apparatus for which it has been repeatedly called the "Sistine Chapel of Northern Italy".
