At the center of the Piazza delle Cinque Scole, is the Fontana del Pianto, built by Pope Gregory therteen in the second half of the 16th century, so that even the Jews could have water and an element of embellishment of the Ghetto. The fountain was near a stake, at which Jews were judged for the crimes committed and where their pawns were auctioned. The name, however, does not derive from the memory of the difficult moments of those who were judged, but from the name of the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto that overlooks the square and preserves a fresco considered miraculous, as the figure of the Madonna, represented in it, he would have shed tears. During the transformation of the Ghetto, at the end of the 19th century, the fountain was removed and only in 1930 was it returned to the square.
