Crossing the Tiber through Ponte Garibaldi, halfway between Via del Portico d'Ottavia and the Lungotevere de 'Cenci, we find Piazza delle Cinque Scole. The name of the square is reminiscent of a building that served as a synagogue or better that housed five "synagogues", each dedicated to a different current of Judaism. In fact one of the rules established for the Jews of the Ghetto forbade the construction of more than one synagogue, even if the population came from different parts of Italy and the world and therefore followed different currents of Judaism. To overcome this problem, it was decided to divide the building into five parts, each one dedicated to a religious current (Siciliana, Catalana, Castigliana, Scola Nuova and Scola del Tempio).
