via della bocca di leone

  Streets of Rome

The name is derived from an old Roman sculpture depicting a lion and fixed on some wall, or from an open-mouthed lion, a sign of an inn or a tavern: but a document quoted by the Roman tells us of « Messer Cencio Bellinzoni at Bocca di Leone, deputy keeper of the cloaca of the source of Trejo », which induces to suppose that the « mouth of Lion » was the manhole of the cloaca of the water of Trevi. We must not forget, in fact, that it was frequent that these manholes were decorated: we have another example in the famous « Bocca della Verità ».
