It seems that it derives from a find made in the sixteenth century, which then made a sensation: during the excavations of the Baths of Agrippa to the Pantheon, wanted by the Cardinal Della Valle, was found a golden imperial crown that surrounded the eye of the vault. The crown appeared to be similar to certain donuts that were eaten in Rome at the time. The innkeeper of an inn next door, advertising ante litteram, rode the wave of enthusiasm for the find and titled The Place « at the Arch of the Donut ». And the name is the only survivor: the Inn has disappeared, the remains of the baths were later demolished.
