  Streets of Rome

The name Arenula comes from the « rena » that the frequent floods of the Tiber deposited on the spot. The name was corrupted and eventually became a rule, from which the neighborhood took its name. Largo Arenula was built in the nineteenth century, tearing down the church of St. Helena, the Church of Sant’Anna dei Falegnami and Piazzale Branca. In 1895 there was erected a monument to the Roman playwright Pietro Cossa, then shot down in 1939 for demanding traffic. In the street there is the Ministry of Grace and Justice, built by Pio Piacenza.
