  Streets of Rome

It is one of the most interesting streets of the historical center of Rome, originally divided into two sections: the first was called « Chiavica di Santa Lucia del Confalone » both for the presence of the church of the same name and for the presence of a cloaca, but more vulgarly it was called « Chiavica di Ponte »; the second section was called the « Cancelleria Vecchia », from the offices of the chancellery that were, before the construction of the new chancellery building, inside the Palazzo Sforza Cesarini. The name of « banchi », extended to the area that includes also Via dei Banchi Nuovi and Via del Banco di Santo Spirito, it referred, to the benches where shopkeepers, bankers, notaries, scribes and merchants of all kinds exercised their business, exploiting the proximity of St. Peter and Ponte Sant'Angelo, where the transit of pilgrims was almost uninterrupted.
