  Streets of Rome

The name of the street recalls the entrance of the Bersaglieri to Rome through the breach of Porta Pia, from which the street begins to end at the crossroads of Via delle Quattro Fontane. Built at the behest of Pius the Forth, the Michelangelesque Porta Pia, the pope wanted to arrange the long and straight way that opened in front of the door. The route was finished in 1565 and was called "Strada Pia" in honor of the pontiff who had enlarged and readapted it. It retained this name until 1870, when it was deemed appropriate to title it on the fateful date of September 20.
