  Streets of Rome

Via Merulana is a historic street in Rome, located in the historical centre, which connects the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore to the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, along the districts Monti and Esquilino. Street names say a lot about their history. For example, via Merulana, derives from the so-called « prata » or « campus Merùli », a possession of Merùla family, which occupied the entire area between the Lateran and Santa Maria Maggiore. This street became famous for the novel by Carlo Emilio Gadda, ‘’That awful mess on via Merulana’’. On via Merulana there is the Brancaccio theatre known for its musicals. A stage is well worth the bakery Panella, an historical local of Roman tradition.
