  Famous people of Rome

Margherita Luti, was the daughter of a baker from Trastevere, originally from Siena, from a noble family fallen into disgrace, it seems that Raphael fell in love and married her, and at the death of Raphael, Margherita entered the Convent of Santa Apollonia in Trastevere. Raphael portrayed her in the nude bust preserved in the National Gallery of Ancient Art of Palazzo Barberini, better known as « La Fornarina ». The same features of the model of the painting of « La Fornarina » can be found in other works by the artist: « La Velata » and in the « Madonna della seggiola » conserved at the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti in Florence, in the « Sistine Madonna » today at the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden, in Clio in the « Parnassus » of the Stanza della Segnatura at the Vatican and in the « Madonna di Foligno » in the Vatican Picture Gallery. « La Madonna del Sasso », the statue that in the Pantheon of Rome is located above the tomb of Raphael, commissioned by the same artist to the pupil Lorenzetto, has the appearance of the « Fornarina».
