It was originally from the « gens » Afrania, a Roman plebeian family. She was the wife of Senator Licinius Buccio, who had carried out the so-called « cursus honorum » to become a senator. Unlike the aristocratic matrons, Gaia Afrania did not defend her interests in court through a lawyer, but presented herself personally, demonstrating good legal knowledge and rhetorical skills and arousing the indignation of historians as Valerio Massimo, who called her a « monster » and shared her with Amasia Sentia and Hortensia daughter of Quintus Ortensio. During his life an edict was issued that forbade women to practise the legal profession.
