Paolina Bonaparte, born in Ajaccio in 1780, sister of Napoleon the First, married in second marriage the Roman prince Camillo Borghese, with whom he had joined in 1803. Paolina and the prince, together with his son from his first marriage, Dermis, they moved to the Roman residences of the Borghese, and the bride, as the absolute lady of Palazzo Borghese, devoted herself to the parties and the pomp, and infidelity. The brother called her several times to order, inviting her to adapt to the life of the capital and threatening to leave her alone if she had left her husband and returned to Paris without him. Canòva portrayed her languidly relaxed and almost complete nakedness. « The victorious Venus » was exposed for some time to the public but fidelity with the original soon aroused the prince s jealousy, which prevented visitors from continuing to contemplate the statue. She died on June 9, 1825 and, according to her will, she was buried in the Borghese chapel of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
