  Famous people of Rome

Agnese was born in Rome from Christian parents, of an illustrious patrician family, in the third century. When he was still twelve years old, a persecution broke out and many were the faithful who abandoned the defection. Agnese, who had decided to offer her virginity to the Lord, was denounced as a Christian by the son of the prefect of Rome, who had fallen in love for her but was rejected. She was exposed naked at the Agonal Circus, near the present Piazza Navona. A man who tried to approach her fell dead before being able to touch her and just as miraculously resources through the intercession of the saint. Thrown into the fire, thanks of her prayers the fire burned out, so she was then pierced with a sword to the throat, in the way that they killed the lambs. This is why the iconography is often depicted with a sheep or a lamb, symbols of candor and sacrifice. Someone places the date of her date during the persecution desired by Emperor Decius, others in 304 during the persecution of Diocletian.
