Dedicated to him the homonymous way, Pietro was a member of an important family of the Roman nobility, he studied literary, legal and musical studies.  A deep connoisseur of classical letters, interested in history and geography, and not unaware of astronomical cognitions, Pietro Della Valle introduced in 1600 in Europe various oriental knowledge and products. He brought to Europe the first specimens of the breed of cats currently called Turkish Angora and according to some authors would have played an important role also in the placing of coffee in Italy introducing in the living rooms of his city. His main results concern the ancient Mesopotamian history, of which, even in the context of an interest that at the time could only be amateurish, introduced the first concepts with an archaeological base. He was in fact the first European to note and describe tablets with cuneiform writing.
