The discovery of the catacombs of San Callisto in 1850, is due to De Rossi, scholar of Greek epigraphy, who in the company of his father Giuseppe Marchi had begun to visit the Roman catacombs.  Responsible for the establishment of the « Lateran Christian Museum », now part of the Vatican Museums, in 1854 he collaborated with Wilhelm Henzen and Theodor Mommsen in compiling « the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum ».
