  Famous people of Rome

He was a painter and biographer of Italian artists, who worked mainly in Rome between the end of the sixteenth and the first half of the seventeenth century. His adherence to the naturalist style provoked the disdain of Caravaggio who, as is well known, did not like being imitated. When, in 1693 , « the Resurrection » of Giovanni Baglione was exhibited at the Chiesa del Gesù, the painting had little success among the painters, at least according to Caravaggio, Orazio Gentileschi, Ottavio Leoni and Onorio Longhi, who composed two satirical poems of Baglione himself and his friend and colleague painter Tommaso Salini. Giovanni Baglione filed a denunciation for defamation. After this trial, Baglione abandoned caravaggism to go back to what Carla Guglielmi Faldi called « his own way ». Although Baglione was not well considered by his colleagues, he was well seen by the high society and the high institutions of the Church, above all for his way of doing with which the powerful ones were ingratiated. and the most important works are the frescoes with stories of Maria in Santa Maria dell Orto ( 1598-1599), a Roman church in which he worked with many works even until 1641.
