He was the nephew of Bishop Arsenio of Orte. He learned Greek from monks from the Byzantine Empire and acquired an unusual education for his times, to make him one of the most educated ecclesiastics of the ninth century. Abbot of Santa Maria in Trastevere and secretary of the Pope, he was appointed librarian of the Roman Church, an important office that gave him great influence on the papal court. He fled Rome in the 848 and was excommunicated by a Roman synod in 850 and, since he had not returned, was the victim of an anathema and deposed by another synod in 853. After the death of Pope Leo Forth in 855, Anastasio was elected Antipope by the Imperial faction in opposition to Benedict Third, failing to prevail.
