  Famous people of Rome

In 1652, Borromini succeeded as architect of the Church of Saint Agnes in Agòne, until then under the direction of Girolamo and Carlo Rainaldi. Borromini designed the suppression of the vestibule originally foreseen, and in this way deriveded a còncava façade, thus giving greater impetus to the cupola. A man of great ingenuity but suffering for the competition with Bernini, he took his own life after giving immense contribution to the Baroque Rome. In addition to the helical staircase to the binate columns of Palazzo Barberini, among the works of the artist deserve to be remembered the convent and cloister of the Barefoot Trinitarians and the Church of San Carlo at the four fountains, first personal Commission; The gallery of Palazzo Spada; The oratory of the Filipinos;  Saint Lucia in Selci and Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza; The restorations of the basilicas of San Giovanni in Laterano and Sant'Andrea delle Fratte; Finally, the renovations of the palaces of Justinian, Falconieri, Carpegna and Propaganda Fide.
