The column of Marcus Aurelius is linked to a famous emperor, Marcus Aurelius. The monument was erected between 176 and 192 in order to celebrate, perhaps after his death, the victories of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius against the Germanic populations of the Marcomanni, the Sarmatians and the Quadi, settled in the north of the middle course of the Danube during the Marcomannic Wars. It is considered by the traditional historiography as an enlightened ruler, the fifth of the so-called "good Emperors".
