His name was Gaius Aurelius Valerio Diocletian. Born into a family of humble origins of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Diocles (this his original nickname) climbed the ranks of the Roman army to become cavalry commander under the emperor Marcus Aurelius Caro. After the death of Caro and his son Numeriano in the campaign against the Sassanid Empire, he was acclaimed Emperor by the Legions. With the advent of Diocletian, the period known as the crisis of the third century, ended. The baths called Diocletian, the largest thermal baths in ancient Rome, were initiated in 298 by Emperor Maximian, named Augustus of the Western Roman Empire by Diocletian, and opened in 306, after the abdication of both.
