  Rome in the Movies

A masterpiece by Vittorio de Sica of 1946, the first foreign film to win the Oscar. It deals with children's issues and the difficult life they are forced to carry on in order to survive the complicated war. « Sciuscià» is a term of the Neapolitan language, now in disuse, which comes from the english shoe-shine and indicates the post-war shoeshine. Some of them will end up in prison and the scenes are shot in the juvenile prison of San Michele a Ripa, on the Lungotevere of Rome.
